What Will Become of These Mariners?

by Geoff Young on February 27th, 2007

An article in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer talks about two displaced starters for the Mariners, Ben Broussard and Jeremy Reed. Both are expected to see reduced roles in 2007, with Broussard taking a back seat to recently acquired Jose Vidro at DH and Reed yielding to Jose Guillen in the outfield. Guillen will play right field, with Ichiro Suzuki moving full time to center, Reed’s former home.

Aside from the fact that it’s obnoxious to assume that Vidro somehow represents an upgrade over Broussard (never mind what it cost the Mariners to acquire their new DH), Reed’s lack of progress has to be considered a huge disappointment. The article notes that:

The Mariners know plenty about Reed, who has been the primary center fielder since being picked up from Chicago in a midseason trade in 2004.

However, what it fails to mention is that Reed was the centerpiece of the deal that sent right-hander Freddy Garcia to the White Sox. This trade at the time was hailed as a “great one for the Mariners”, but it didn’t quite work out that way. Garcia, you may recall, earned a World Series ring in 2005.

Reed, for his part, turns 26 in June. Although he’s not exactly old, he’s no longer young or inexperienced enough to use that as an excuse. Injuries have played a role, but sometimes guys just don’t pan out. Seriously, ask me about Sean Burroughs some time.
