Unintentional Humor in the ALCS

by Geoff Young on October 17th, 2007

Yeah, the Indians beat the Red Sox.

Again.

My favorite part of the evening came when Manny Ramirez hit a solo home run in the sixth. Boston trailed in the series, 2-1, and in the game, 7-2, when he hit his blast. Dan Shaughnessy explains the rest:

Establishing that he is classless as well as clueless, Ramírez raised his hands at home plate and admired his shot even though the Sox trailed, 7-3.

See, stuff like that is almost enough to make me root for the Red Sox.

Almost.

Still, its nice to know that Ramirez enjoyed himself in Tuesday night’s loss. I’m sure his teammates and fans appreciate that.

For as good as a hitter as he is, I still loath Manny. He’s got zero class. It annoys me to no end, when he does crap like that - and then you see kids in little league trying to emulate that kinda stuff.

It’s almost like he has no respect for the game.

    /minor rant

I don’t know if Manny has no class - I actually like the guy - but I am sure he has no clue…

Home Run - “(Internal voice:)Yeah me! Oh yeah, we’re down, by quite a bit…”

Personally, I think he just gets caught up in the moment sometimes. He was back in Cleveland and hearing the boo birds, and it was the third homer in a row for Boston … (as meaningless as that really was at the time)

Would 99% of major leaguers have done that? No. But I think classless and clueless are way too harsh. And like Shaughnessy is one to talk …

I can’t speak to “classless” since I don’t know the guy, but “clueless” seems pretty accurate to me. There’s nothing wrong with getting caught up in the moment, but when the “moment” involves pulling your team to within four runs of the lead, well, that’s stretching things a bit for my taste.

How do we even know that Manny knew what the score was?

    Interesting point. I hadn’t considered that angle…

There are reports that Manny is almost entirely oblivious to things going on around him, not sure if they are true or not. Certainly watching him play the outfield makes you wonder if mentally he is all there.

“Wow, that grass is green…wonder when I’ll bat next….hey that ball is coming towards me, should I get it?”

To hit the ball like Manny has for this many years, you have to know what’s going on. When reading media types like the one above (not Geoff of course … the one he linked to) you’re going to get the story that sells more. Which is, Manny is lazy, Manny doesn’t care, Manny is stupid, etc.

There are a couple of good articles on Manny’s work habits that (I think) are a little more accurate. Of course, I don’t know him either and I have no idea how smart he is. It’s just my feeling that he is a lot more intelligent (and he cares a lot more) than it would seem.

A showboat? Prolly. A little aloof? Maybe.

Clueless/classless … I don’t think so. But it’s just my opinion and I can see how others can get that feeling (and it may be true).
