Tigers Win, Cardinals and Mets Wait Another Day
Did the Detroit Tigers just get bored at the end of the regular season? After losing 31 of their final 50 games, they mowed through the New York Yankees in four and now have taken the first two against the A’s at Oakland in the ALCS.
Justin Verlander and four relievers combined to overcome two homers and four RBI by Milton Bradley on Wednesday night, en route to an 8-5 victory. Closer Todd Jones survived a terrifying ninth that ended on a pitch that Frank Thomas just missed and hit to Curtis Granderson in shallow center. The offensive hero for Detroit was, of all people, Alexis Gomez, who matched Bradley’s four RBI. No disrespect to Gomez, but the guy has 11 career regular season RBI.
And over in the NLCS, the Cardinals and Mets were rained out in New York. The two clubs will try again to get their series started on Thursday evening. It’s kind of a lucky break for MLB, which inexplicably had scheduled both playoff games at the same time on Wednesday. Now, with the ALCS headed back to Detroit, the National League will be alone in the spotlight on Thursday.
