Tampa Bay Prospect Throws Bat At Ump!

by Tyler Knott Gregson on April 27th, 2006

Ok so we’ve got one guy missing part of a game from laughing too hard, and now we’ve got another minor leaguer suspended indefinitely…for what, you ask? How about for chucking his freaking bat and hitting the umpire in the chest!

One of Tampa Bay’s top prospects, Delmon Young was called out on strikes in the first inning of the Durham Bulls game against AAA Pawtucket Red Sox. After the call and argument he was ejected and then reportedly “flipped his bat” underhand; the bat sailed and sailed and then nailed the umpire right in the chest. Oops.

Young has said he “sincerely regrets” his actions and that he got caught up in the heat of the moment. Yeah, understatement of the century pal. Remember when it was bad to bump the bill of your hat on the umpire’s nose? That’s apparently been replaced by throwing bats right at the ump. Am I the only one with visions of Juan Marchial looming over John Roseboro with his bat in his hand? Yikes.

Personally, I say he gets at least a year suspension.  These ump’s aren’t scabs, they are amateur’s doing the best they can and I’ve heard from many, many sources they’re doing a darn good job.  My dad just watched a few Pawtucket/Durham games in Durham a few weeks ago and by all accounts, umpiring is fine.  The players KNOW they are supposed to be on their best behavior towards these umps, and then this?  Give him a year, minimum, I don’t care how good of a prospect he is; he assaulted the ump, and you know what, the ump COULD press charges if he wanted.  We’ll see what happens, but that’s where I stand.
