Sucks to Be Steinbrenner
I guess it’s true what they say: You just can’t get good help for $198 million anymore. In case you missed it, the New York Yankees were trounced by the Detroit Tigers, 8-3, on Saturday. For eight innings, Jeremy Bonderman dominated the Yankees, sending them home early for the winter and helping his Tigers advance to the ALCS.
The team with the lowest payroll in this year’s playoffs (Minnesota Twins) was the first to get bumped, and the team with the highest is the second. Seems to me when you’ve got that kind of money invested in your team, anything less than a championship is unacceptable. When you think about it, that’s a pretty lousy situation — not that I’m shedding tears for anyone, mind you. Feeling sorry for the Yankees is like feeling sorry for Paris Hilton — they don’t need my pity.
Major League Baseball and its advertisers, meantime, are sweating bullets as they hope that the New York Mets reach the World Series and keep the east coast folks interested. Hey, I could live with that.
