Rockies Sign Lopez

by Geoff Young on January 10th, 2007

The Colorado Rockies have signed veteran catcher Javy Lopez to a 1-year deal worth $750,000. Lopez was a disaster in 2006 for the Red Sox and Orioles, batting .251/.297/.386 in a shade over 350 plate appearances.

Lopez is 36 years old, and his offensive numbers have taken a huge hit in each of the past two seasons. It’s possible that he’s nearing the end of what has been a very solid career.

Then again, Mike Piazza appeared to be on his last legs before enjoying a resurgence last year in San Diego; maybe the Rockies will have similar luck with Lopez. Either way, it won’t cost them much to find out.
