Pirates Sign Herrera
The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed Cuban right-hander Yoslan Herrera to a 3-year, $1.92 million deal. Herrera, age 25, is expected to start the season in Triple-A. From Baseball America:
Herrera’s strong suits are his knack for pitching, command and above-average curveball. His fastball ranges between 88-92 mph and he also throws a split-finger fastball. Some scouts project him to throw harder once he’s throwing more regularly.
The recent track record of Cuban pitchers is pretty mixed. Livan and Orlando Hernandez have had some success, as have Jose Contreras and even Danys Baez (yeah, I rip on the guy, but he at least has a career). Others, like Rene Arocha, Rolando Arrojo, Osvaldo Hernandez, Adrian Hernandez, and Hansel Izquierdo — not so much.
We’ll see what Herrera can do…
