Orioles Sign Gomez

by Geoff Young on December 20th, 2006

The Baltimore Orioles re-signed infielder Chris Gomez to a 1-year, $850,000 deal. Gomez turns 36 in June but is coming off a shockingly strong campaign during which he hit .341/.387/.439 in 55 games. A 1992 third-round pick of the Detroit Tigers out of Long Beach State, Gomez enjoyed his greatest success while with the San Diego Padres in the mid-’90s, including as starting shortstop on the 1998 World Series team.

Gomez has played mostly first and second base over the past couple seasons, although he can still play on the left side of the infield in a pinch. I’m only being somewhat facetious when I say that this could be the Orioles’ best signing of the winter.
