Orioles Re-Sign Cabrera

by Geoff Young on January 8th, 2007

The Baltimore Orioles have re-signed right-hander Daniel Cabrera to a 1-year contract worth $1.8 million. Cabrera has electric stuff, but the results have been lackluster to this point. The hiring of former Atlanta Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone was supposed to help, but no luck yet.

Still, Cabrera doesn’t turn 26 until May, so there’s plenty of time. Walking fewer than 5 1/2 batters per game would be a good start. Number one on his list of comparable pitchers at Baseball-Reference is Jason Schmidt, which is exactly the name I was thinking of before I checked. Interestingly, Schmidt is one of the few pitchers to come up through the Braves organization that Mazzone couldn’t seem to get on track.

And if you’re looking for a cautionary tale, check out #2 on the list of comps: Jason Bere. My unbelievably bold prediction is that Cabrera will have a career better than Bere’s but not as good as Schmidt’s.

Yes, I know I am a weasel. ;-)
