Jonathan Papelbon - Second Straight Blown Save - Red Sox Fans Worry?

by Stephen Kersey on May 10th, 2008

Jonathan Papelbon has appeared in less than 150 games as a relief pitcher but he has quickly become one of the best closers in the game of baseball. When Papelbon takes the mound, he oftentimes makes opposing hitters look hopeless.

However, for the second straight game, the right-hander out of Mississippi State has blown a save for the Boston Red Sox. The two blown saves were his first blown saves of the season. Last year, Papelbon had 37 saves and only three blown saves to go with a 1.85 ERA.

His first blown save was Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers. Papelbon gave up two unearned runs as the Tigers beat the Red Sox by a final score of 10-9. On Friday, the Minnesota Twins tagged Papelbon for two earned runs in the bottom of the ninth.

On the season, Papelbon now has a 2.55 ERA to go with ten saves and a 2-2 record. While Papelbon is currently struggling a bit, it’s not time for Red Sox fans to struggle. He’ll turn it around and won’t have more than a handful of blown saves the rest of the way.
