Harwell Speaks

by Geoff Young on January 20th, 2007

Brian Borawski has a two-part interview with Hall of Fame Detroit Tigers radio broadcaster Ernie Harwell up at The Hardball Times (disclaimer: I’m a contributor to THT). In the first part, Harwell talks about his recently released “audio scrapbook,” the old Dodgers-Giants rivalry (not the current version, but back when both were in New York), and interviewing such notable figures as Joe DiMaggio and Connie Mack (!).

The second part of the interview touches on baseball’s radio-friendly pace, historical ballparks, and the 2006 World Series team. Great, great stuff here. Be sure to check out both parts when you have a moment.

Geoff, your breakdown of the data is interesting. I would think that someone who does well on all metrics is probably a good fielder and that someone who does poorly on all metrics is probably a bad fielder. However, as you pointed out, there is a group of people in between where the variability is so great that we can’t really make a conclusion.

I don’t think fielding metrics work too well for first basemen as most of these systems are based largely on range and that is not a first baseman’s main function. I don’t think there is any metric which quantifies how well a first baseman takes throws from infielders and that is something which is probably more important than range.

Shortstop is more of a concern and I’m not sure why there is so much variability at that position. I don’t know if that happens every year or whether this year is an aberration. I need to look into that more.

    Lee
