Garvey’s Last Chance
This is Steve Garvey’s last chance to be elected to the Hall of Fame. His name first appeared on the ballot in 1993, and voting peaked at 42% — well short of the 75% needed — in 1995.
A quick glance at Garvey’s career numbers, shows that he’s nowhere near being worthy of enshrinement. The fact that he’s been on the ballot this long is, frankly, a bit puzzling. He had a pretty decent run from 1974 to 1980, but it was hardly overwhelming.
Here’s my favorite part of the article at MLB.com:
He won more Gold Gloves than any first baseman in the Hall of Fame.
You know how many Gold Gloves Garvey won? Four.
First basemen don’t go to Cooperstown because they can play defense. Best not even to mention Garvey’s four Gold Gloves as a point in his favor. Seriously, because nobody cares.

When I was a kid I thought Steve Garvey was a superstar but then I lived on the East Coast and only saw him during the All Star Game and the World Series when Vin Scully would talk about how great he was. At least he can cherish having his number retired by the Padres.

Heh. Isn’t it ironic that the Padres have retired Garvey’s number but the Dodgers, with whom he spent most of his career, have not?
