Frank Robinson CRYING? Wait, WHAT?

by Tyler Knott Gregson on May 26th, 2006

Start booking bomb shelters, start stocking up on bottled water, flashlights, batteries and canned food…the world just might be ending.  The old adage “there’s no crying in baseball” apparently just isn’t true, and when guys like Frank Robinson start crying about things other than winning the World Series, somethings going on.  Perhaps it is a sign of the apocalypse.

He was crying, well, because he had to pull a veteran out of the game mid-inning.  There’s no REAL rule that says you can’t do it, but you bet your butt there’s an unwritten one.  It’s just not done to a veteran, or a good player for that matter…if you have to take him out, you do so discretely, between innings.  Not so with Robinson, the Nationals, and catcher Matthew LeCroy.

Bottom line is, I’d have pulled him too, and according to LeCroy, so would his Daddy.   The man let 7 base runners steal in 7 innings, and then, on the 8th, threw the ball all the way into center field.  Yikes.  Sound off, would you pull him?  Would you let him wait it out?  What’s your take?

1 opinion for Frank Robinson CRYING? Wait, WHAT?

There truly is NO written rule that says you can’t pull a guy in the middle of an inning & yes, the “book” is filled with hundreds of unwritten rules… In this case, however, it fell in line with that old saying “they shoot horses, don’t they?” (a reference once made to putting a horse out of his misery after he broke his leg)… Perhaps, Frank was merely trying to put LeCroy out of his “misery” before the pain, suffering, & embarassment got any worse… It was the right thing to do, in my opinion… I have never been the biggest fan of Frank, but I truly believe that he didn’t make the move out of disrespect… I really do think he was trying to get him out of there before he was humiliated further… And in the “OH BY THE WAY” category, I guess we will never again hear that expression about putting horses out of their misery by shooting them… Did you see the x-rays of Barbaro’s recently reconstructed leg with all those pins?????
