Chatting with Colletti

by Geoff Young on January 21st, 2007

Joe Hamrahi has a nice interview with Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti, who provides some insight into what to expect from his team in 2007. Here’s an interesting tell:

I would rather “overpay” in dollars for a shorter period of time. There are so many things happening, and I like the idea of having options. Most of the time when you’re talking about a player who has been hurt or doesn’t perform up to expectations, the area I find that most people get concerned with, including myself, is the length of the contract. It’s not like you have somebody for one more year, and you have to make the best of it and hope they rebound.

I personally think that Colletti made a huge mistake in signing Juan Pierre to a five-year deal, but I’ll give him credit for nabbing Jason Schmidt. In light of some other signings this off-season, three years for a pitcher of his caliber is a steal.

Good stuff as always from Hamrahi. Give his interview with Colletti a read when you have a chance.
