Marlins Give Hanley Ramirez a $70 Million Extension

The Florida Marlins run a bargain basement operation. With a total team payroll less than what Alex Rodriguez will make this year with the New York Yankees, it’s a bit surprising to hear the news that the Marlins and Hanley Ramirez have agreed a six-year, $70M extension.
Then again, if there is anyone in the […]

Frank Thomas Signs with the Athletics

After clearing waivers, Frank Thomas signed a one-year contract with the Oakland Athletics. We reported soon after Thomas was released by the Toronto Blue Jays that the Athletics had interest in the Big Hurt and the pairing became official on Thursday.
Thomas and the A’s wasted no time, as Thomas was in the lineup for […]

Frank Thomas Cut - Big Hurt Destinations?

Frank Thomas wasn’t pleased with a decrease in at bats and the Toronto Blue Jays were tired of waiting for his bat to come around. The two sides seemingly got what they wanted when the Blue Jays cut Thomas.
On the season, Thomas was batting .167 with three homers and 11 RBI for Toronto. […]

Pirates Pick Up Yates from Atlanta

The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired right-handed reliever Tyler Yates from the Atlanta Braves for minor-league right-hander Todd Redmond. The latter is a former 39th-round pick who only struck out 6 batters per 9 innings in High-A last year at age 22. Every case is different, of course, but those guys don’t have a real good […]

Twins Extend Nathan

The Minnesota Twins have signed closer Joe Nathan to a 4-year, $47 million deal. Since coming to Minnesota in 2004, Nathan has the best ERA in baseball (1.94, min. 280 IP). Given the apparent going rate for closers, this is pretty good value.
That said, can anyone explain to me what the heck the Twins are […]

Maybin ‘Demoted’ to Minors

The Florida Marlins have optioned young outfielder Cameron Maybin, acquired in the Miguel Cabrera giveaway, to Double-A Carolina. He’s 20 years old, so there’s no hurry. Besides, now he might get to learn what winning feels like.

Tigers Extend Cabrera

According to ESPN, the Detroit Tigers have inked “third baseman” Miguel Cabrera to an 8-year, $153 million contract extension. With the understanding that the economics of baseball are inherently insane, this strikes me as pretty darned good value.
Cabrera was my dark horse candidate for MVP in 2007, and although it didn’t quite work out that […]

Wakefield’s Influence Only Gets You So Far in Life

The Boston Red Sox have released backup catcher Doug Mirabelli. The 37-year-old backstop has amassed 89 hits against 148 strikeouts over the past three seasons and possesses exactly one usable baseball skill — the ability to catch Tim Wakefield’s knuckleball.
That may not sound like much, but it was enough to give Mirabelli a career. Hey, […]

Twins Sign Livan Hernandez

The Minnesota Twins have inked veteran right-hander Livan Hernandez to a 1-year deal worth $5 million plus incentives that could kick the total value up to $7 million.
This is a great pickup by the Twins. Hernandez is 33 years old and has made 30 or more starts in each of the past 10 seasons. He […]

A’s Sign Foulke

Looks like Keith Foulke is coming out of retirement. The Oakland A’s have signed the veteran right-hander to a 1-year deal worth $700,000 plus incentives that could kick the total value up to $3.2 million.
Reports have Foulke’s fastball in the mid-’80s, but he’s never been a flamethrower, so that shouldn’t be an issue. More importantly, […]
