Cotts to Cubs Rotation?

In an unexpected twist, southpaw Neal Cotts is being considered for the #5 spot in the Chicago Cubs rotation. I’d assumed that if healthy, Mark Prior had a lock on the position, but apparently this is not the case. Or maybe someone is trying to light a fire under Prior?
So, what’s the deal with Cotts? […]

Spring Training Photos

No, they’re not mine. I don’t head out to Arizona until the end of the month, but Jim McLennan at AZ Snakepit has taken some nice shots of the Diamondbacks and Chicago White Sox.
You fired up, or what?

Another Prospect List for 2007? Sure, Why Not

Aaron Gleeman has posted the first installment of his top 50 prospects in baseball headed into the 2007 season. Gleeman lists Brewers’ third baseman Ryan Braun at #41. Braun is opening some eyes this spring in camp and could force his way onto the big-league roster very soon.
Love this quote from Braun:
I’m ready. I’m definitely […]

Vlad’s Knees

Apparently there is some question regarding the health of Vladimir Guerrero’s knees. Depending on whether you ask him or his manager, you’ll get a different answer:
Guerrero led AL outfielders with 11 errors last season. He said he would offer no excuses and said the condition of his knees “never affected me.”
And from Mike Scioscia’s spot […]

Betemit and Ortiz

I’m listening to the Dodgers and Red Sox on XM Radio. According to the Boston announcers, current Dodgers manager Grady Little claims that infielder Wilson Betemit has as much power as David Ortiz.
Say what? Maybe Little is talking about the 2000 version of Ortiz that knocked 10 homers for the Minnesota Twins. Somehow I don’t […]

Konerko Connects

Watching my second televised game of the spring. Cubs and White Sox, WGN. Cubs lefty Rich Hill strikes out the first two batters he faces, then serves up a long home run to Paul Konerko. Hill fell behind on breaking balls, then left a 3-2 fastball down and out over the plate. Konerko hammered it […]

Hamilton Starts Strong

Okay, it’s less than a week, but already some intriguing stories are shaping up in spring training. One of them is that of outfielder Josh Hamilton, the #1 overall pick in the 1999 draft. Selected by the Cincinnati Reds in this past winter’s Rule V draft from the Devil Rays, the 25-year-old Hamilton is making […]

Smoltz Sails through First

Don’t worry, I won’t be doing this all season. Just had to mention that John Smoltz looked fantastic in his first inning of work this spring. He retired the Pirates in order, displaying strong command of his fastball, breaking ball, and changeup.
On another note, what’s up with the the Pirates’ uniforms? I’m hardly a fashion […]

First Televised Baseball Game of Spring 2007

Just a quick heads-up: Braves and Pirates are on ESPN at 10 a.m. PT. That’s, like, 2 hours from now, so find an excuse to get out of that horrible Friday meeting and plant yourself in front of the nearest TV set.
Baseball is back. Ah, I feel better already.

2007 Spring Training Video

Found this on YouTube. Even though it’s the Giants, it’s pretty cool:
