Reader Brian K. informs us that John McHale has died at age 86. McHale played 64 games for the Detroit Tigers from 1943 to 1948, plus three more in the 1945 World Series, which Detroit won over the Chicago Cubs.
After his playing career, McHale continued to work in baseball. He became president of the expansion […]

Cardwell Dies at 72

Right-hander Don Cardwell, who pitched for the Phillies, Cubs, Pirates, Mets, and Braves from 1957 to 1970, died Monday at age 72. Cardwell owned a 102-138 career record and is perhaps best known for his role on the 1969 “Miracle” Mets. Another member of that team, Hall of Famer Tom Seaver, had kind words for […]

Staley Dies at 87

Former big-league right-hander Gerry Staley has died at the age of 87. Staley’s career spanned from 1947 to 1961, during which he won 134 games. He reached double digits in victories for five straight seasons, from 1949 to 1953, before later moving to the bullpen. As a reliever, he made four appearances for the White […]

Kennedy Dies at 28

Apologies for the delay in posting this; I was on vacation and heard about it but I had no Internet access. Left-hander Joe Kennedy died November 23 near Tampa at age 28. Kennedy, a native of San Diego, had been an eighth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1998. In addition to the […]

Rizzuto Dies at 89

Forgive my tardiness in mentioning this, but Hall of Famer Phil Rizzuto died Monday at age 89. Rizzuto played for the New York Yankees from 1941 to 1956, and was awarded the American League MVP in 1950. After his playing career, Rizzuto served as broadcaster for the Yankees for many years.
My condolences to Rizzuto’s family […]

Beck Dies at 38

Former big-league closer Rod Beck died on Saturday at age 38. I’d cite statistics, but that doesn’t tell you much about the man. He spent part of 2003 here in San Diego and was one of the few reasons to watch the Padres in an otherwise miserable season.
My condolences to the family and friends of […]

Hancock Dies at 29

This is heart-breaking. St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Josh Hancock was killed in a car accident early Sunday morning. The Cardinals’ scheduled game yesterday with the Cubs was canceled.
Out here in San Diego, at Petco Park, Hancock was honored with a moment of silence before the start of Sunday’s game against the Dodgers. For those of […]

Kuhn Dies at 80

Former MLB commissioner Bowie Kuhn died Thursday at age 80. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.
I don’t have a strong recollection of Kuhn’s tenure (I was in high school when he vacated the office), but David Pinto at Baseball Musings shares his opinions on the matter.
One passage from the ESPN article stands […]

Ruhle Dies at 55

Former big-league pitcher Vern Ruhle has died at age 55. His best season came in 1980, while he was with the Houston Astros.
I’ll always remember that ‘80 Astros team, because they beat my childhood team — the Dodgers — in a 1-game playoff at the end of the season to win the NL West. Tommy […]
