Reno 911

Seems the PCL’s Tucson Sidewinders will be moving to Nevada in the near future. According to the Arizona Daily Star, the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks is expected to relocate to Reno after the 2008 season.
Attendance at Sidewinders games has been lacking. Reno, meanwhile, has a rich minor-league history — most recently in the […]

The Russian Judge Gives Him a Ten

Not that I condone such behavior, but this truly is brilliant:

Quick mini-review of Phillip Wellman’s ejection:

Tossing hat: 7 — not bad, but seen it before
Getting in plate umpire’s face: 7 — again, fairly generic stuff
Covering home plate with dirt: 9 — starts out fairly simple, but the attention to detail and showmanship are impressive; he […]

Justin Upton, Destroyer of Worlds

Well, okay, maybe not worlds. But with the way Justin Upton is destroying pitchers, it’s only a matter of time before he sets his sights on the planets.
B.J.’s little brother, the first pick overall in the 2000 draft, is batting .325/.386/.775 in 11 games at Double-A Mobile since being promoted from Visalia. He hit “only” […]

Need Offense? Visit Lancaster

While many baseball fans were keeping close tabs on the weekend’s intense interleague rivalries — who could resist the fabled Colorado/Kansas City, Philadelphia/Toronto, and San Diego/Seattle matchups — a three-game series in the Class-A California League saw 83 runs score. Yes, I said 83.
The Lake Elsinore Storm traveled to Lancaster, home of the JetHawks and […]

Recent Rule V Draft History

I somehow missed this when it first came out, but Marc Hulet has done some nice analysis of the Rule V draft over at Baseball Analysts. Although much of what he says applies to current draftees, Marc also examines the draft’s recent history.
I’ve been working under the assumption that Johan Santana is the only good […]

BA Chat with Jurrjens

Baseball America’s David Laurila has done a nice little Q&A with Detroit Tigers right-hander Jair Jurrjens. I love this exchange:
BA: You have very good control. Is there such a thing as throwing too many strikes?
JJ: I’ve read that my weakness is throwing too many, but that’s the first thing they teach you — to throw […]

Another Prospect List for 2007? Sure, Why Not

Aaron Gleeman has posted the first installment of his top 50 prospects in baseball headed into the 2007 season. Gleeman lists Brewers’ third baseman Ryan Braun at #41. Braun is opening some eyes this spring in camp and could force his way onto the big-league roster very soon.
Love this quote from Braun:
I’m ready. I’m definitely […]

Sickels on Seven Skills

This is sort of review material for those of us who have been reading John Sickels’ work for a decade or more, but Sickels provides a nice little primer on how he evaluates prospects. Three points stand out for me:

Strike zone judgment is extremely important. Absolutely. Control the strike zone, control the game.
OPS is not […]

Yet Another Prospect List for 2007

Bryan Smith has posted his list of Top 75 prospects for 2007 over at Baseball Analysts. I’ve come across three top x prospects articles so far (see Related Posts below), and a few names keep appearing in the top 10. Here they are in alphabetical order:

Homer Bailey, RHP, Cin
Alex Gordon, 3B, KC
Philip Hughes, RHP, NYA
Cameron […]

Behind the Scenes at the Ballpark

Cool video of what goes on behind the scenes at a ballpark — in this case, before and during a minor-league game in Durham. And that’s no bull. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.) Enjoy…
