Hard to find stuff that isn’t about A-Rod or Barry Bonds these days (I just realized that “indicted” and “inducted” share all but one letter — yeah, I’m real quick that way), but here’s something kind of fun: Baseball America has released its list of Top 20 prospects from the Arizona Fall League in ‘07.
Cameron […]

We’ve touched on minor league equivalencies (MLEs) as a method for interpreting a player’s minor-league performance. Now Chris Constancio at Hardball Times (full disclosure: I am a contributor to THT) is looking at MLEs with an eye toward refining the translations. In his first installment, Chris examines the role of experience on MLEs. Always more […]

On our way back from Cooperstown, we stopped in Springfield, Mo., and got to see the Springfield Cardinals take on the Arkansas Travelers. Springfield is clear across the state from St. Louis — about a three-hour drive — but there’s no doubting fans’ allegiance (hint: note the sea of red).
Also, if you get sick of […]

I got to watch two innings of baseball in Surprise, Ariz., on my way from San Diego to Albuquerque. Games in the Arizona League — the lowest level of Rookie ball in the minors — are unbelievably informal. There are two teams, two umpires, and maybe two fans.
The game I saw, between the A’s and […]

Brandon Watson, an outfielder for the Columbus Clippers, broke a 95-year-old International League record on Sunday by collecting a base hit in his 43rd consecutive game. The previous record had been set by Rochester’s Jack Lelivelt during the Taft administration.
As Taft himself once noted, “Failure to accord credit to anyone for what he may have […]

Seems the PCL’s Tucson Sidewinders will be moving to Nevada in the near future. According to the Arizona Daily Star, the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks is expected to relocate to Reno after the 2008 season.
Attendance at Sidewinders games has been lacking. Reno, meanwhile, has a rich minor-league history — most recently in the […]

Not that I condone such behavior, but this truly is brilliant:
Quick mini-review of Phillip Wellman’s ejection:
Tossing hat: 7 — not bad, but seen it before
Getting in plate umpire’s face: 7 — again, fairly generic stuff
Covering home plate with dirt: 9 — starts out fairly simple, but the attention to detail and showmanship are impressive; he […]

Well, okay, maybe not worlds. But with the way Justin Upton is destroying pitchers, it’s only a matter of time before he sets his sights on the planets.
B.J.’s little brother, the first pick overall in the 2000 draft, is batting .325/.386/.775 in 11 games at Double-A Mobile since being promoted from Visalia. He hit “only” […]

While many baseball fans were keeping close tabs on the weekend’s intense interleague rivalries — who could resist the fabled Colorado/Kansas City, Philadelphia/Toronto, and San Diego/Seattle matchups — a three-game series in the Class-A California League saw 83 runs score. Yes, I said 83.
The Lake Elsinore Storm traveled to Lancaster, home of the JetHawks and […]

I somehow missed this when it first came out, but Marc Hulet has done some nice analysis of the Rule V draft over at Baseball Analysts. Although much of what he says applies to current draftees, Marc also examines the draft’s recent history.
I’ve been working under the assumption that Johan Santana is the only good […]
