Hall of Fame Road Trip Photos

As I’ve mentioned on several different occasions, I drove from San Diego to Cooperstown in July to see Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. At long last, I have photos — 158 of them, in fact — to prove it. Click on the montage below to view the […]

Rizzuto Dies at 89

Forgive my tardiness in mentioning this, but Hall of Famer Phil Rizzuto died Monday at age 89. Rizzuto played for the New York Yankees from 1941 to 1956, and was awarded the American League MVP in 1950. After his playing career, Rizzuto served as broadcaster for the Yankees for many years.
My condolences to Rizzuto’s family […]

Hall of Fame Recap

I teased last week with a brief recounting of my trip to Cooperstown to see Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Now I’ve got something a little more fully formed up at Hardball Times. Enjoy!

Hall of Fame Induction Weekend

Okay, I’ve attended some crazy events in my day, but Cooperstown was complete madness this weekend. I got to watch a few outs of the annual minor-league game played at Doubleday Stadium on Saturday before the rains hit (Aberdeen ended up beating “hometown” Oneonta for those interested), wander around the museum, and see a little […]

Off to Cooperstown

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m driving from San Diego to Cooperstown to see Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. inducted into the Hall of Fame. Transmissions may be sporadic for the next 10 or so days, but I will try to check in as often as possible with updates from the road. Wish me luck…

Better Late Than Never — Bucs Retire Waner’s Number

Paul Waner’s accomplishments as a member of the Pirates from 1926 to 1940 go well beyond impressive. By the time he left Pittsburgh, he’d compiled numbers that stack up well with more recent stars such as Rod Carew and Tony Gwynn. For his career, which included brief stops in Brooklyn and Boston (and 10 games […]

The Politics of Retiring a Number

Well, I suppose it was only a matter of time. Seems Babe Ruth’s granddaughter wants MLB to bestow upon Ruth the same honor it has given Jackie Robinson. She wants the Babe’s number retired throughout baseball.
Slippery slope, meet can of worms.
The unfortunate truth is that whenever you honor someone in this way, you also make […]

Tomorrow’s Hall of Famers, Today

Joe Posnanski at Soul of Baseball discusses which current National League players he expects one day to see in the Hall of Fame. The entire piece is worth reading, but one incidental riff on the pettiness of some in his profession (Joe is a professional sportswriter) stood out to me:
Now I was really confused. Baseball […]

Ranking the Greatest Players Ever

Dave Studeman at The Hardball Times (disclaimer: I am a contributor to THT) provides more bar room fodder for the masses with his Historical Win Shares Above Bench. I’ll leave the methodology and the top 10 to Studeman; however, a few things are worth mentioning:

I did not realize that Gary Sheffield’s historical numbers were that […]

Pleading Blyleven’s Case

Rich Lederer at Baseball Analysts has been making the case for Bert Blyleven’s inclusion into the Hall of Fame for some time. He’s got two new pieces up — one directed at writer Buster Olney and another more general article that compares Blyleven to his contemporaries. There’s a lot of good food for thought in […]
