Thoughts from Opening Day in Japan

No, I didn’t get up at 3 a.m. to watch Opening Day in Japan. Maybe if the Padres had been playing, but the Red Sox? Meh.
(As an aside, is anyone else sick of the word “meh” to show indifference? I’ve used it here to sound hipper than I actually am, but I kinda hate it. […]

Alexei Ramirez at Spring Training

Alexei Ramirez is one of the latest Cuban defectors to land in a big-league organization. He played second base in the game I saw, and didn’t do much to distinguish himself one way or the other, but some folks think he’ll end up in the outfield. As you can see, Ramirez has quite the uppercut […]

Dukes in Trouble Again?

The St. Petersburg Times reports that Tampa Bay Devil Rays outfielder Elijah Dukes was tossed out of a game in the Dominican Republic for an incident with an umpire.
Dukes reacted angrily after being called out on strikes in the ninth inning and was ejected after going chest-to-chest with the umpire, and had to be restrained […]

Who Might Be Coming Over from Japan in 2008?

That’s the question Jackson Broder asks at East Windup Chronicle. He profiles several hitters and pitchers playing in Japan’s NPB who could make the jump to North America.
Kosuke Fukudome of the Chunichi Dragons has been getting a fair amount of play as a potential impact outfielder should he cross the pond. Jackson compares him to […]

Why Aren’t There More Japanese Relievers in America?

You know me and efficiency. I’m always looking for the better, cheaper way to get things done. I have a particular fondness for the way the San Diego Padres and a few other teams are able to identify and procure relatively obscure relievers that can help a club just as much as (or more than) […]

Open to Interpretation

Need $300,000? Why not become an interpreter for a Japanese ballplayer coming to North America?
I’m being flippant, of course. The fact is, these guys can really help players acclimate to their new environment:
The Yankees, the Boston Red Sox and the Seattle Mariners, each with two Japanese players, will each have two full-time interpreters this season. […]

Will Carroll on Matsuzaka

Matsuzaka Watch has done a terrific interview with Will Carroll on Daisuke Matsuzaka (you were expecting someone else?). They cover a ton of ground here, but one of the more interesting tidbits has to do with the use of pitch counts as a measure of workload and predictor of future injury.
Pitch counts have gotten a […]

Yankees Sign Igawa

The New York Yankees have signed Japanese left-hander Kei Igawa to a 5-year deal worth a reported $20 million. He’s getting nowhere near the hype that Daisuke Matsuzaka received earlier this winter, but Igawa’s numbers in Japan have been pretty solid.
Need more info on Igawa? Go nuts:

Pirates Sign Herrera

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed Cuban right-hander Yoslan Herrera to a 3-year, $1.92 million deal. Herrera, age 25, is expected to start the season in Triple-A. From Baseball America:
Herrera’s strong suits are his knack for pitching, command and above-average curveball. His fastball ranges between 88-92 mph and he also throws a split-finger fastball. Some scouts […]
