Some Games (Almost) Never End

I’ve got a new article up at Hardball Times about a 22-inning game between the Dodgers and Astros back in ‘89. Two current big-league managers and a Hall of Famer played in this one…

1973 Amateur Draft

My latest article at Hardball Times, Revisiting the 1973 draft, is now up for your viewing pleasure. Dave Winfield was drafted as a pitcher? Eddie Murray as a catcher? Who knew…

Platoons of the ’80s

How appropriate that so many great baseball platoons were in effect during the decade that brought us the movie Platoon. Steve Treder at Hardball Times (full disclosure: I contribute to THT) has published the latest in his look back at “extraordinarily productive left-right platoon partnerships.”
A couple things stand out to me. First, it’s amazing how […]

Fire Sale in San Diego?

Relax, it happened 14 years ago. For those interested, I’ve recounted the events over at Hardball Times.
The entire affair is still a bit painful for Padres fans, although some good came out of it. Heck, the team made it to the World Series 5 years later.

Better Late Than Never — Bucs Retire Waner’s Number

Paul Waner’s accomplishments as a member of the Pirates from 1926 to 1940 go well beyond impressive. By the time he left Pittsburgh, he’d compiled numbers that stack up well with more recent stars such as Rod Carew and Tony Gwynn. For his career, which included brief stops in Brooklyn and Boston (and 10 games […]

Who Is the Best Lefty Reliever in History?

That’s the question the Baseball Crank attempts to answer. His argument for Billy Wagner is compelling in many respects, although the relative lack of appearances and innings are knocks against him. I think it’s pretty clear that Wagner will be the best before long. Right now, though, I’d probably give the nod to John Franco, […]

Bonds Homers, Giants Edge Closer to Fourth Place

Barry Bonds hit the 747th home run of his career on Monday night to help the San Francisco Giants defeat the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-3. Bonds’ two-run shot off Josh Towers came in the fourth inning and landed beyond the fence in right-center, some 438 feet from home plate.
The Giants, meanwhile, improved their record to […]

Kruk Ain’t No Historian

Seems ESPN baseball analyst John Kruk is a little confused about the history of #44 in San Diego. He thinks he’s the last Padres player to wear the number, but of course right-hander Jake Peavy currently wears it. For a more complete discussion of the Padres and #44, head over to Ducksnorts…

Hoffman Saves #500

San Diego Padres closer Trevor Hoffman notched career save #500 on Wednesday night against the visiting Dodgers. You can read all the details pretty much anywhere, so I’ll just share some photos I took at the game:

More pix posted at Ducksnorts. Enjoy!

Fearing Rafael Ramirez

Rain Delay’s comment about Rafael Ramirez got me thinking (uh-oh!). Even though his numbers never were great, Ramirez had a knack for swinging at and hitting the worst pitches imaginable, at the most inopportune times. As a fan of the opposing team, I hated to see him come up in close situations because he was […]
