Carlos Gomez, the 22-year-old centerfielder for the Minnesota Twins, hit for the cycle on Wednesday night against the Chicago White Sox. Gomez became the first Twin in 22 years to hit for the cycle. The last player on the Twins to hit for the cycle was Kirby Puckett.
On the third pitch of the […]

Ron Necciai’s name came across my virtual desk not long ago, specifically the fact that he once fanned 27 batters in a game. Yeah, that got my attention.
So I did a little surfing and found a fascinating article on Neccai. The game took place May 13, 1952, in Bristol, Va., and according to Necciai, “I […]

My latest article is up at Hardball Times: “Ten pitching seasons to forget.” Two of these guys actually won the Cy Young Award at some point in their careers, which just goes to show that anyone can have a bad year.
Enjoy!

That’s the question on the table over at Vegas Watch. I won’t spoil things for you by revealing the 10 most likely active players to hit .400 in a season, but I will agree with the sentiment that if Derek Jeter achieves the feat, we’ll never hear the end of it…

I forgot to mention that Jim Thome knocked his 500th career home run over the weekend. In light of Thome’s homer, the inevitable question of whether he is a Hall of Famer has surfaced. My first reaction was that he’s an absolute no-brainer, but then I looked at his numbers, which tell a different story.
The […]

With the season winding down, I thought it might be fun to look back at some of the bigger surprises this year. In no particular order, here are nine things that have blown my mind:

With just one previous big-league start under his belt, Boston Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz no-hit the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night at Fenway. If I’m not mistaken, Wilson Alvarez was the last pitcher to throw a no-no in his second career start — on August 11, 1991, against — you guessed it, the Orioles.
Whatever […]

Bad timing, eh? On the same day that the Baltimore Orioles reward manager Dave Trembley with a contract extension, his team gets beat, 30-3, by the Texas Rangers. That would be an American League record for runs in a game.
Every starter in the Texas lineup had at least two hits and one run. Rookie Travis […]

Arizona right-hander Brandon Webb’s scoreless innings streak is up to 42. Jacob at Vegas Watch calculates Webb’s chances of breaking Orel Hershiser’s record of 59 set back in 1988. The odds are long, but better than you might think. Still, Webb does have to go through Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun, and the Brewers in Milwaukee…
