Bonds Admits Aaron’s Record Is Probably Safe

by Tyler Knott Gregson on April 24th, 2006

Hmmm…I don’t know quite what to make of this choice little gem.  Part of me wonders if he’s being honest, frank, and humble, the other part of me wonders if he’s being that guy in the race that trips and falls on purpose when he knows he’s not going to win, just to avoid having to Really lose.  Not sure.

Regardless, Barry Bonds has hinted in the media that there is a high probability that Hammerin’ Hank Aaron’s home run record is most likely safe; that injuries and a strained lower body is keeping him from reaching that famous goal.

Currently, Bonds is sitting at 709 bombs, 5 off of Babe Ruth’s mark, and 46 behind Hank’s.  A humble Barry…or a man caving under immense pressure?  You tell me.

I read this in two ways:

    1. He knows he is guilty of steroid abuse and feels like MLB most likely will strip any record from him he achieves, including stats earned in time period of steroid use (after it was banned) if found guilty under law.

    2. He is announcing his retirement without saying as much.h

You know, I think both are completely viable options. Neither would surprise me anymore, it’s slowly becoming a bigger and bigger circus. That’s why I wrote that post about the “tragedy” of MLB.
