Biggio Collects 3000th Hit

by Geoff Young on June 28th, 2007

Two huge milestones in one day? Believe it. First Frank Thomas knocks his 500th homer, and now Craig Biggio collects the 3000th hit of his career.

Biggio hasn’t been an elite player since the late-’90s, but there’s no denying he’s had a brilliant career. It’s easy to forget that he first reached the big leagues as a catcher and in fact became an All-Star at that position.

Biggio’s stretch from 1993 to 1998 was just sick. Over a stretch of 894 games, he hit .304/.399/.476 and stole 209 bases at a 79% success rate. He also won four Gold Glove awards at second base.

The best part of Biggio’s story? He did it all for one team, the Houston Astros. I love that…

When Biggio first came up to the bigs, the thing that sticks in my mind the most, is that not only was he the catcher but the lead off hitter.

You don’t see the catcher leading off much at all if ever, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was the last catcher to do so…(I maybe wrong there though)

I believe Jason Kendall batted leadoff in Pittsburgh for a while, but you’re right, there aren’t too many catchers who find themselves in that role.

That’s a great point Geoff, he did play for one team. As a Padres fan I’ve got immense respect anyone who stays in town.

Your right Geoff now that I think about it, and I think Kendall did it in Oakland too.
