Beavers Top Heels, Repeat as Champs
The Oregon State Beavers defeated the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, 9-3, on Sunday night to claim their second consecutive NCAA championship. This marks the fifth time in history that a school has taken the title in back-to-back seasons. The last time it happened was when LSU did it in 1996-97.
Congratulations to the Beavers and their fans on a fine season. To survive the field of 64 and emerge on top two years in a row is a remarkable achievement. Well done!

Not to bad for a team that wasn’t supposed to make into the field of 64. They are also the first National Champs to have a sub-.500 conference record.
Still, I wish I was going to be in Portland today for their arrival back in Oregon.

So what do you think the chances are that Mitch Canham starts his pro career with Eugene?

Ah, thanks for the reminder about the sub-.500 conference record. They mentioned that last night in the telecast. That is impressive.
As for Canham, I’d assume he’ll start at Eugene. That’s usually where the Padres’ top college draftees debut.

No problemo. :)
Well hopefully thats the case with Canham. That means I’ll have to take the trip up to Eugene and hopefully catch some games.

madfriars.com is reporting that Canham signed today … expected to be assigned to Eugene, except the Emeralds already have 2 catchers who have started the season well!
Also, the Beavers didn’t come back from Omaha via Portland this year … Pioneer Plaza was not available … so they flew into Eugene and paraded thru town back to campus for a big rally at Parker Plaza yesterday … and a good time was had by all!

Also, props to UNC for making it to the Finals 2 years in a row … that fact has been totally lost in Beaver-mania … I’d bet no team has ever lost back-to-back finals!

Stanford was runner-up in ‘00 and ‘01 (and ‘03!) … Texas in ‘84 and ‘85 … ASU in ‘72 and ‘73 (both to USC) … and who could forget Yale in ‘47 and ‘48 :-)

LM- Darn it. Well it wouldn’t have mattered anyways I’m in Medford so either way I was hosed and wasn’t going to be able to see them return to Oregon.
Hopefully I can get up that direction and catch a few Em’s games this year.
