Astros to World: We’re Not Dead Yet

by Geoff Young on September 30th, 2006

The Houston Astros survived a shaky ninth inning to beat the Atlanta Braves, 5-4, on Saturday. With the St. Louis Cardinals holding off the Milwaukee Brewers earlier in the afternoon, one game separates the Astros and Cardinals headed into what should be the final day of the season.

If the Cardinals win on Sunday, they take the NL Central. If they lose and the Astros win, things could get interesting. I doubt it will come to that, as John Smoltz and the Braves should give Andy Pettitte and the Astros a much tougher fight than Carlos Villanueva and the Milwaukee Brewers give Chris Carpenter and the Cardinals.

Then again, as former Cardinals pitcher and all-around quotable guy Joaquin Andujar is quick to remind us: “There is one word in baseball that says it all, and that one word is ‘you never know’.”
