Kendrick Gets Punk’d

This video is now making the rounds (hat tip to reader Peter F.). Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Brett Myers set up an elaborate plan to convince teammate Kyle Kendrick that he’d been traded to Japan. I’m not normally a huge fan of these gags, but this one is brilliant:

K-Rod Looks to Future, and It Might Not Be in Anaheim

According to Bill Plunkett at the Orange County Register, 2008 could be closer Francisco Rodriguez’ last season in an Angels uniform. Rodriguez is scheduled to have an arbitration hearing on Thursday to determine this year’s salary, but will be eligible for free agency after the season.
Quoth Rodriguez:
If they wanted me here, they would have done […]

Free Download: Excerpts from Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual

Just a quick heads-up to the Padres fans in the crowd. Yeah, I can see both of you from here.
Anyway, my latest book, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual, is scheduled for publication the week of February 25. While we’re waiting for it to hit the bookstores, here are two items of potential interest:

Who Am I? (18 Feb 08)

Photo by Xurble   some rights reserved
I haven’t made these challenging enough for the likes of you. Let’s see if we can change that:

I was born during the Eisenhower administration.
I am a former first-round draft pick.
I once won my league’s batting title.
I never drew as many as 40 walks in a single season.
Four of my former teammates […]

Giambi-o Speedwagon

Heard it from a friend who
Heard it from a friend who
Heard it from another…
–REO Speedwagon, “Take It on the Run”
Not to dwell on the Yankees, but right now they’ve got the funniest coverage in baseball. On the heels of O’Neillgate, now we have a report that Jason Giambi is “in great shape.” Beyond the fact […]

In Lieu of Actual News, Let’s Talk about Paul O’Neill’s Number

The Yankees have issued number 21 to recently signed Morgan Ensberg. Apparently this passes for news in New York because Paul O’Neill used to wear that number.
Anything to distract from the headline that writes itself, I suppose.

Five More Things You Don’t Know About Me

Hey, look, our favorite meme is here. This time I’ve been tagged by David Chase at Brock for Broglio. Let’s see if I can find anything that we didn’t cover last year. Here goes nothing:

Thanks to spending several years in a cover band, I can sing a somewhat passable “Hotel California,” a tune I never […]

More Notes from the Old Cal Fall League

The other day I mentioned an old article at Ducksnorts that talked about a bunch of big leaguers I saw before they reached the Show. Well, I found another article with more players. Some highlights:
[Mets infielder Ty] Wigginton, a second baseman, reminded me a bit of Braves prospect Marcus Giles, a fellow San Diegan who […]

Clemens, McNamee, and Other Vermin

Getting in late on this because a) I have a book to finish writing, and b) I find the whole affair disgusting, but for those interested, pitcher Roger Clemens and his former trainer Brian McNamee are testifying before Congress. Jayson Stark is blogging it at ESPN.
People suck…
