Mariners Sign Silva

We take a quick break from our regularly scheduled steroids coverage to note that the Seattle Mariners have inked right-hander Carlos Silva to a 4-year deal worth $44 million. Silva is an innings pig who doesn’t allow many walks or strikeouts. In fact, his career K/9 of 3.76 is disturbingly Eiland-esque.
Usually I whine about these […]

Did We Bring This on Ourselves?

One of the fascinating themes of the current steroids issues is the “loss of innocence” it presumes. I’m not the most cynical or jaded guy on the planet, but I’d be lying if I said the extent of the current findings surprised me in any way. I’d also be lying if I said it didn’t […]

Some Games (Almost) Never End

I’ve got a new article up at Hardball Times about a 22-inning game between the Dodgers and Astros back in ‘89. Two current big-league managers and a Hall of Famer played in this one…

Rose Decries Steroid Use in Baseball

Wrestling legend and bastion of integrity Pete Rose weighs in with his thoughts on steroids in baseball. Well, it’s about damn time. Quoth the hit king:
I’ve been suspended 18 years for betting on my own team to win. I was wrong … but these guys today, if the allegations are true, they’re making a mockery […]

Tuesday Linkfest

Sounds kind of kinky, don’t it? Yeah, well, it’s not:

Jim at AZ Snakepit wonders about the Diamondbacks pitching staff.
Eric at Philliesflow searches for hidden gems in right field.
Harper at Oleanders and Morning Glories reacts to news of Paul LoDuca’s inclusion in the Mitchell Report.
Kurt at Goat Riders of the Apocalypse muses on the nature of […]

If I Were the Reds…

Back at the end of November, when Cincinnati signed Francisco Cordero, reader Doug Fulkerson offered some suggestions on who the Reds might bring in to bolster the rotation and asked me to do the same. I’ve been meaning to get back to this question for a while, so without further ado and acknowledging that pickin’s […]

Favorite Plays

While perusing my colleague Blake’s poker blog All Poker Addicts, I came across a post about “favorite hands” and it got me thinking (put away the fire extinguisher, my head always does that when I think): what are your favorite plays in baseball? Here are some of mine:

Straight steal of home. Without question the most […]

Diamondbacks Acquire Haren, Trade Valverde

The Arizona Diamondbacks made two big trades on Friday. Both involved high-profile pitchers.
Prospects for Haren
In the first, they sent a boatload of minor leaguers to Oakland for right-hander Dan Haren and change.
The linked article provides detailed information on the prospects involved. Suffice to say, they aren’t scrubs. Arizona has a very deep farm system and […]

Mitchell Report: Okay, Now What?

As I continue to wade through the report and digest the large number of names contained therein, a few questions come to mind:

How surprised is anyone by the magnitude of this?
How surprised should we be?
Should players and others be held accountable for their actions?
If yes, how forthcoming will athletes be in the future?
If no, what […]
