Brackman Faces Surgery

In news that will come as a complete shock to absolutely no-one, New York Yankees first-round pick Andrew Brackman will undergo “Tommy John” surgery to repair his right elbow. Brackman was considered a huge risk headed into the draft due to elbow problems that kept him out of the ACC and NCAA tournaments this season. […]

Is It Hot in Here, or Is That Just the Pennant Races?

I hope you had an excellent baseball weekend. I’ve got no complaints. Well, that’s not entirely true, but you didn’t come here for those. ;-)
Some great games on Monday’s schedule, including four big playoff contender showdowns:
American League

Yankees at Tigers, 4:05 p.m. PT — Mike Mussina and Justin Verlander hook up at Comerica Park. Mussina has […]

Clemens, Maddux, Moyer: Oldies, but Goodies

Super lightning quick, here are your games for Friday:

Yankees at Tigers, 4:05 p.m. PT — It seems like these two teams are always playing each other. Anyway, Roger Clemens and Andrew Miller makes for an interesting matchup. Aside from the fact that Clemens is twice as old as Miller, it’s also worth noting that lefties […]

Dodgers Sign Wells

Hey, finally some good news. The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed 44-year-old left-hander David Wells, who apparently doesn’t know when to say when.
Wells spent most of the season pitching for the San Diego Padres. It’s great to see that he is doing everything he can to help propel his former employer toward the playoffs.
[Tip o’ […]

All-Time Gold Glove Team

Speaking of defense, as we were earlier today, the all-time Gold Glove team has been announced. Most of these guys make sense to me, although I’m a little surprised to see Wes Parker at first base over the likes of Keith Hernandez and J.T. Snow.
Then again, I never saw Parker play, so what do I […]

Tangotiger is conducting his yearly scouting project. If you watch a particular team (or teams) enough to make solid judgments on the defensive abilities of its players, get on over there and vote!

Rangers Demolish Orioles, Set American League Record

Bad timing, eh? On the same day that the Baltimore Orioles reward manager Dave Trembley with a contract extension, his team gets beat, 30-3, by the Texas Rangers. That would be an American League record for runs in a game.
Every starter in the Texas lineup had at least two hits and one run. Rookie Travis […]

Orioles Extend Trembley

ESPN reports that the Baltimore Orioles are bringing back Dave Trembley as manager in 2008. Trembley had been a minor-league manager in the organization for the past four years before signing on as bullpen coach for the big club this season.
The Orioles have played well under Trembley, and it’s great to see a “lifer” rewarded […]

Webb vs the Brewers and Other Games for a Wednesday

Wednesday. The middle of the week. Humpday. Halfway between there and here. Eh, you get the point. Some good games on tap today…
American League

Indians at Tigers, 4:05 p.m. PT — Just a half-game separates these AL Central rivals. Paul Byrd vs Justin Verlander looks like a mismatch, and I suppose it is. Byrd, though, is […]

Streaking Webb

Arizona right-hander Brandon Webb’s scoreless innings streak is up to 42. Jacob at Vegas Watch calculates Webb’s chances of breaking Orel Hershiser’s record of 59 set back in 1988. The odds are long, but better than you might think. Still, Webb does have to go through Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun, and the Brewers in Milwaukee…
