Phillies Sign Garcia

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed outfielder Karim Garcia to a minor-league contract. Remarkably, he’s still just 31 years old.
Here’s a fun exercise. I’ll give you groups of three players. Two of them were considered top prospects in 1996, the other was not. You tell me which is which:
Group A — outfield

Mike Cameron
Karim Garcia
Andruw Jones

Group B […]

Yankees Re-Sign Cairo

The New York Yankees have re-signed infielder Miguel Cairo to a 1-year contract worth $750,000. Cairo is a mediocre second baseman who is very challenged at other positions. He doesn’t hit, has no power, and doesn’t get on base. In some cities, he is known as Geoff Blum.

White Sox Sign Erstad

The Chicago White Sox have signed outfielder/first baseman Darin Erstad to a 1-year, $1 million deal with a club option for 2008. Erstad has spent his entire career with the Angels, for whom he played in just 40 games last season due to injury.
It’s hard to imagine labeling a guy with 1500+ career hits a […]

Tigers Sign Eischen

The Detroit Tigers have inked left-handed reliever Joey Eischen to a 1-year minor-league deal that would be worth $700,000 if he is added to the active big-league roster during the regular season. Eischen was hurt most of last year, but posted a 3.22 ERA over 57 appearances for the Washington Nationals in 2005.
Eischen turns 37 […]

Astros Sign Everett, Lane, and Ensberg

Everett, Lane, and Ensberg. Doesn’t that sound like a law firm? Adam Everett would make a great defense attorney. Get it? Hah, I crack myself up sometimes. Other times, not so much.
Anyway, the Astros have signed these three guys to 1-year deals. Everett’s is worth $2.8 million plus incentives, Jason Lane’s is worth $1.05 million, […]

Mets Sign Sele

The New York Mets have signed right-hander Aaron Sele to a 1-year deal worth $1 million if he is added to the 40-man roster.
Cockroaches. Twinkies. Aaron Sele.
We don’t know how they survive, they just do.

Mariners Sign Rhodes

The Seattle Mariners have signed left-handed reliever Arthur Rhodes to a minor-league deal. Rhodes has been around forever. His best season in the big leagues came with the Mariners in 2001, when he fashioned a spiffy 1.72 ERA over 68 innings.
Rhodes was brutal last season, posting a 5.32 ERA over 45 2/3 innings for the […]

Rangers Sign Wright

The Texas Rangers have signed veteran right-hander Jamey Wright to a minor-league deal. The Oklahoma native is expected to compete for a spot in the back of the rotation.
In nearly 1500 innings at the big-league level, the 32-year-old Wright has posted a 5.14 ERA. Granted, he’s spent much of his 11-year career pitching in some […]

Baseball Fan Fests?

Does your favorite team have a fan fest of some sort? Chances are, they do. I just got back from the Padres’ event, called FriarFest. Fans had a chance to meet players and get their autographs, buy game-worn jerseys, and run around on the field. Here’s your esteemed (and very humbled) author delivering a pitch […]
