Witt on Hall of Fame Ballot?

You never really think about someone with a career 142-157 record and a 4.83 ERA as a Hall of Fame candidate, but apparently Bobby Witt is on this year’s ballot. Witt was selected third overall in the 1985 draft by the Texas Rangers and pitched for seven teams over the span of 16 years.
My main […]

The end of the year finds me in a retrospective mood. In case you missed them the first time around, here are the most popular posts at Knuckle Curve this year as judged by you:

Marlins Sign Boone

The Florida Marlins have signed infielder Aaron Boone to a 1-year deal worth $925,000. Boone turns 34 in March and will take over for the departed Wes Helms as backup at first and third base. Boone hit .251/.314/.370 in 104 games for the Cleveland Indians in 2006. Over parts of nine major-league seasons, he owns […]

Brewers Sign Suppan

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed right-hander Jeff Suppan to a 4-year, $42 million deal. I’m becoming a bit numb to these dollar amounts (or maybe I’m enjoying too much holiday cheer). Suppan isn’t a bad pitcher, but I don’t see the merit of offering a #4 type starter a long-term deal. That said, in the […]

Names of Players Who Tested Positive for Steroids in 2003?

In case you missed it, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco has ruled that federal investigators can have access to the names of roughly 100 players who tested positive for steroids in 2003. Not surprisingly, the players’ union will contest the ruling.
Acknowledging that the use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs […]

Giants Sign Zito

The San Francisco Giants have signed left-hander Barry Zito to a deal worth — sit down for this one — $126 million for 7 years. The contract includes an $18 million option for the 2014 season, as well as a full no-trade clause.
Here’s all you need to know about the deal. Zito’s former teammate in […]

Brown Dies at 45

A buddy just sent this my way. Former big-league third baseman Chris Brown is dead at age 45. Brown, who played for the San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, and Detroit Tigers from 1984 to 1989, died from burns suffered in a fire at his home in Sugar Land, Tex.
The fire took place in late […]

White Sox Re-Sign Cintron

The Chicago White Sox have re-signed infielder Alex Cintron to a 1-year, $1.9 million deal. Formerly a top shortstop prospect in the Diamondbacks organization, Cintron has regressed since a fine rookie campaign in 2003, when he hit .317/.359/.489 in nearly 500 plate appearances for Arizona.
Still just 28 years old, I suppose there’s some possible upside […]

Yankees Sign Igawa

The New York Yankees have signed Japanese left-hander Kei Igawa to a 5-year deal worth a reported $20 million. He’s getting nowhere near the hype that Daisuke Matsuzaka received earlier this winter, but Igawa’s numbers in Japan have been pretty solid.
Need more info on Igawa? Go nuts:

Deciphering Rumors Out of Boston and New York

The New York Post has reported that the Yankees are looking to deal 43-year-old left-hander Randy Johnson. According to this particular article, several teams are interested and are willing to part with more than they probably should.
There’s a pattern to these items. It goes a little like this:
[Team from Boston or New York] is looking […]
