Phillies Sign Helms

The Philadelphia Phillies inked third baseman Wes Helms, who had been with the Marlins, to a 2-year contract worth $5.45 million. Helms turns 31 in May and has exceeded 300 at-bats in a season just once in an 8-year career. He put up strong numbers (.329/.390/.575 in 240 AB) for Florida in 2006 while primarily […]

Mets Sign Old Guys

Names and numbers up front this time:

Jose Valentin: 1 year, $3.8 million
Orlando Hernandez: 2 years, $12 million
Damion Easley: 1 year, $850,000
Moises Alou: 1 year, $8.5 million

Jose Valentin
Valentin came back from the dead (and the Dodgers, where he hit .170/.326/.265 as a 35-year-old) to put up some serious numbers (.271/.330/.490) for the New York Mets in […]

Dodgers Sign Garciaparra, Pierre, Wolf, Martinez

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti worked under San Francisco GM Brian Sabean for many years and it shows in his willingness to move top prospects (Joel Guzman) for spare parts (a month of Julio Lugo) as well as his propensity to overspend on defense. Colletti has been active so far this winter, but I’m not […]

Astros Sign Lee, Williams

Good morning, and happy Thursday. Still catching up on all the moves that happened while I was gone. Honestly, couldn’t they have waited? ;-)
Carlos Lee
There is concern in some circles that Carlos Lee doesn’t play good defense and/or won’t age well. However, his deficiencies in the field may have been overstated and I’m not sure […]

Rockies Sign Matsui

The Colorado Rockies re-signed infielder Kazuo “Cautionary Tale” Matsui to a 1-year deal worth $1.5 million. The former Japanese star has yet to accomplish anything on this side of the Pacific and frankly, I can’t figure out why he’s still here. On the bright side, at least the Mets won’t be paying him $8 million […]

Reds Sign Gonzalez, Stanton

Maybe someone in Cincinnati can answer this one for me: What the heck is Wayne Krivsky doing? He couldn’t afford to take Felipe Lopez to arbitration but he can throw $14 million at Alex Gonzalez for 3 years of mediocrity at shortstop? Gonzalez is useful, and other non-descript middle infielders should be grateful to him […]

Cubs Sign Many, Show More Dollars Than Sense

We’ve already touched on the Aramis Ramirez signing, but the Chicago Cubs didn’t stop there. They’ve also signed right-handers Kerry Wood and Wade Miller, catcher Henry Blanco, infielder Mark DeRosa, and outfielder Alfonso Soriano. We’ll take a look at these one at a time.
Kerry Wood
The deal with Wood is 1 year, $1.75 million. He hasn’t […]

Blue Jays Sign Thomas, Zaun

So, does anyone else suspect that maybe the owners aren’t suffering as much as they would like us to believe? There have been some downright perplexing signings this winter, among which are two made by Toronto.
Frank Thomas
I’ve admired Frank Thomas’ skill set of power and patience for a long time, and it’s great to see […]

Rangers Sign Catalanotto

The Texas Rangers have signed Frank Catalanotto, previously with the Blue Jays, to a 3-year, $13 million deal. Catalanotto, who called Texas home from 2000 to 2002, is a left-handed batter who specializes in hitting line drives all over the place, sporting a career .297/.362/.454 line in nearly 3500 plate appearances.
Catalanotto used to be a […]

Angels Sign Speier, Matthews

Thanks to the Angels, two sons of former major league players now have fatter wallets. Right-handed reliever Justin Speier and outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. both have agreed to terms with the team that plays its home games in Anaheim.
Justin Speier
Speier, who had spent each of the past three seasons pitching for the Blue Jays, signed […]
