FOX Sports (via Baseball Musings) has posted a list of this year’s free agent crop. As of October 31 (players have until November 11 to file, so this doesn’t include, e.g., Barry Zito), it’s not an overwhelming list, and I can imagine several of these players being overpaid due to scarcity of quality at the […]

Okay, so I’m a little late to the party on this one, but I have a good excuse: I actually had to think about stuff before writing it. Scary stuff, that!
Major League Baseball and the MLBPA union have agreed on a labor deal that runs through 2011. As a fan, I’m always happy to see […]

In researching a book I’m currently writing about the San Diego Padres, I’ve been doing some reading of my own. One of the chapters in my book will focus on a single game. To learn more about details that might be worth noting throughout the course of that game, I’ve been reading Steve Fiffer’s How […]

I continue to be fascinated at how far baseball has traveled around the world. From the Confederation of European Baseball comes news that former big-league pitcher Al Leiter visited the Czech Republic earlier this month to participate in an instructional clinic, sign autographs, and generally serve as an ambassador for baseball.
Incidentally, the CEB web site […]

There are no more baseball games to be played. The World Series is over, and I won’t be making it out to the Arizona Fall League this year. What are we supposed to do between now and spring training?
Sigh. I miss it already…

ESPN is reporting (via 6-4-2) that former big-league pitcher Joe Niekro is dead at age 61 due to a brain aneurysm. Niekro was a third round pick of the Chicago Cubs in 1966 and made his debut with them the following season, finishing 10-7 with a 3.34 ERA in his rookie campaign.
Niekro won 221 games […]

How did this happen? It’s a question many fans, experts, and I expect the Detroit Tigers are asking themselves right about now.
The St. Louis Cardinals, with their 83-78 regular season record, have won the World Series. They clinched it Friday night in front of a delirious home crowd with a 4-2 victory over the Tigers.
How […]

It’s the seventh inning of Game 5 between the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals, and I find myself wondering three things:
How long will the umpires continue to tolerate Albert Pujols showing them up? His little bat flip after first base umpire Tim McClelland correctly ruled that he’d offered at a Justin Verlander pitch didn’t […]

This is a little heavy on the talking (my German is terrible) and light on the action, but it’s always good to see baseball being played around the world. This footage is from the 2006 Swiss Playoff Semifinals between the Bern Cardinals and the Zurich Challengers. The Cardinals went on to win the championship, which […]

While I’m off escaping to the central California coast for a few days, I thought I’d leave you with a few bits from Stan Hart’s Scouting Reports, which provides actual photocopied reports and commentary on 40+ players from back before they signed professional contracts. We’ll feature a different player each day this week. Enjoy!
We’re going […]
